SEPTEMBER 3 - REST DAY IN LA GRAMITA

So, here we are:  Nice day, beautiful beach, no electricity 18 hours a day, no cell service or Internet.  15 riders are being treated for smart phone withdrawal :)

After breakfast (where Catriona scammed an extra 2 plates of eggs for our table), most of us listened to a talk by Dan Frye who used to work at Wood's Hole. He discussed some of the processes that shaped the earth and affect our climate and tied it into Global Warming and El Nino.  The most relevant question:  How much longer do we get these nasty southerly headwinds in the afternoon?  Probably until we turn east at Nazca.

Then we went for a short hike.  Here's the view of one of the other cottages from our doorway.

View off shore looking west.  There's hole in the Wall, South America

View the other way.  We're heading for the middle sized hill two bays over.

After a short walk we're up on the hill. Looking back towards 'town.'

From the top of the hill, a look at the highway in the distance.  Miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles (which we have to ride across tomorrow).

There is an un-excavated archaeological site down below us.  The outer walls are clearly visible.

A stairway down.

Another stairway - notice that the rocks appear to be just selected and placed, as opposed to being shaped and then placed..

Blackened earth with a lot of shells in it.  Midden?

Interesting square opening - an oven?

Enough archaeology.  Here's one of the local inhabitants at our cottage.

Then it's off to lunch.  Some of the lunch crowd wandering along (oh, I forgot to mention I went body surfing before breakfast - the beach photo reminded me).

Chowing down on fresh fish, rice & lentils.  Next some very fresh ceviche.

A local family having lunch next to us.

Some of the fishermen.

That's it for now.  We did a bit of bike maintenance and are cleaning up and packing away our gear.  Since we don't have a tent to pack, we get to have a sleep-in until 0500 :(

(It's September 5 and we're in Lima.  I'm too tired to update the blog nos, so I'll try to get to it tomorrow, on our day off)
